Aeron Charmagon has a sleeping disorder.  He falls asleep in his high school classes and in every other inconvenient place he happens upon.  This results in a trip to the emergency room one day when his mother can't shake him awake.  The doctor has no idea what is wrong with him, and suggests that he go to a sleep study institute.

Ohale is an orphan, a trader, and a thief.  But he is not a cruel man, just a man with a healthy sense of reality.  He is a fair hand with a sword though, and his business gives him a worldly insight.  When he and his companions spot a group of Modlar Riders heading for his hometown of Mmoim one day, he figures something is afoot.

When Aeron and his young nurse friend Julia begin work at the Oregon State Dream Analysis Center, they find that Aeron's peculiar sleep problem is like nothing OSDAC has seen before.  But when Aeron begins talking about his new dreams in a fantasy world, the scientists really take notice.

Julia discovers that Aeron is getting a bit schizophrenic, until he helps her to realize that Ohale is inside his waking mind, while Aeron is in-turn inhabiting Ohale's days.
